2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 6(left) Assembly

I hope you like puzzles... because assembling the blocks in this section feels like putting a puzzle together to me.

There are several partials seams that we will need to leave open until the blocks in Section 6 center are ready to add.

The strips measurements and diagram are located on page 28 of your pattern book.

I began at the bottom, cutting and attaching the strips below and above the SqNsq block.

Then add the strip on the left.

I also sewed the two small strips on the right.

Sew the Courthouse Step block to the top and add the two smaller strips down the right side.

Sew the Hourglass Bordered&Squared to the top of this and add the long strip that goes down the left side.

Next I added the strips above Nurses Cross... Notice that there are two of the smaller strips located here.

This next part of the section drove me a bit crazy.  There are several partial seams that you will need to leave some stitches undone until we are ready to complete the seam.

1.  Sew the two strips that go beside the Hourglass Bordered & Squared block.  Attach the strips but leave a few stitches below the block un-sewn for a partial seam.

2.  Sew the 1 long and 2 shorter strips together that go below the SqNsq block...again a partial seam that needs to be left un-sewn a bit.
Sew this strip set to the bottom of the SqNsq block.

3.  Sew the SqNsq block to the bordered pinwheel.... leave the partial seam un-sewn a bit.

Sew the Nurses cross to the BorderedPinwheel, SqNsq, and strips
section.

Then sew the Pinwheel Bordered, SqNsq, and strips to the Nurses Cross section.

To complete this section:
Sew two SqNsq blocks together.
Add the strips below
Add a third SqNsq
Then add the strips below that.
Attach this strip of blocks to the 3 strips above.

You can now close up this partial seam and sew the long seam all the way down to the bottom of the section.

Section 6(left) is now complete.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 6 (left) Square in a Square blocks)

We have made these SqNsq blocks several times before.  I didn't take pictues as I made each one for this section so I am recycling older pictures for the demo.

In this Section 6 (left) we need five 3in blocks.

Cut the center squares and 4 corner squares.

Draw a diagonal line... and sew opposite corners onto the center square.

My stitch line is beside drawn line so that when you flip it up the corners will meet.

I used my Buddy Ruler to draw a second line 1/4in from the first.  If you stitch beside this line and cut between the lines, you will have two Bonus HSTs to add to the back or use in another project.

Add the two opposite corner in the same manner.

Here is a picture of my completed blocks for this section.

Now it is time to assemble.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 6 (left) Pinwheel Bordered

Cutting measurements and directions for this Pinwheel Bordered block can be found on page 19 left hand column. You start by making the 4in Pinwheel block.

Then just below the diagram are the cutting directions for the strips to make this 6" bordered block.

<<<<I have cut all my pieces and laid them out here.

<<<I pair up my triangles and sew the four HSTs.

<<<<Then I sew the HSTs into two pairs

I missed taking a few pictures....

Sew the two HST pairs together to make the pinwheel.

Then add the top and bottom border
Then the two side borders

Voila!  a completed block.

2019 Gypsy WIfe Quilt Along - Section 6 (left) Courthouse Step

Cutting measurements and directions for the 4" Courthouse Step block can be found on page 20 lower right hand column.

Cut pieces and lay out the pieces.

I forgot to take the step-by-step pictures, but this block is easily assembled

Sew the top and bottom borders onto you block.
Press.
Then sew the two side borders to complete this simple block.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 6 (left) Hourglass Bordered and Squared

This Hourglass Bordered & Squaread block, located just under the Nurses Cross,  is another in this pattern that drove us crazy.

The diagram on page 28 shows it as a square bordered and squared... but there are no cutting directions for the size block needed to fit here.

Looking at the picture of the quilt on the front page of the pattern we determined that it should actually be an Hourglass bordered and squared.

The pattern directions are a bit confusing for this block too.  All found on page 21, but a bit of back and forth between columns to get it done.

Start by using the cutting measurements for the 2" finished hourglass block found on page 21 right hand column.

Then you are to follow the assembly directions found in the left hand column for the 3" finished block.

Then, go to assembly directions found in the right hand column.

There you will find the cutting measuarements needed to add the border and surrounding square to this block.

The final line in the right hand column tells you it will finish as the 5" block we need.

Yep... confusing... but hopefully my pictures below will help you through.  I've colored the lines above to make it easier to follow along in the pattern book... I hope.

Let's begin here:
Follow the red lines to find the cutting measurements to start the center hourglass.  Cut your squares.

To find the assembly directions for the hourglass block follow the orange lines above. (I've done a pictorial here below)

Lay the 2 cut squares facing each other.
Draw a diagonal line and sew 1/4in on each side.
Cut between the lines to make two half square triangles (HSTs)

Next we lay the two HSTs on top of each other ... opposite colors touching and cut on the diagonal.

Now we stitch the two pairs together to make two hourglass blocks.  Open them up and I spun the center to help it lay flatter in the quilt. (We only need one... the other can be used elsewhere)

Now, we go back to the yellow line assembly directions.
Here you find the green line cutting directions  to complete this block.

<<<Here I have laid out all the cut pieces.

Now we add the border.... sewing on top and bottom then left and right strips.

Lastly, we add the for triangle corners to square this block.... Top and bottom first, sides next.

Voila!  your completed block.

2019 Gypsy Wife - Section 6 (left) - Nurses Cross

Cutting directions for this block can be found on page 14 of the pattern book.   Remember to keep your ruler lines ON the fabric when cutting.                                                                                             I began by laying out the pieces for the center of this block.

<<<Sew the innermost triangles to the cross bars of the block.

Sew the cross bars to the center square.

<<< Sew the center block together matching the bars with the center square.

Trim.

I forgot to take pictures of this next step.... but you will sew the triangles on opposite sides of the block to surround it.

<<<< Here it is completed, and surrounded with the remaining pieces of this block laid out.

Next, sew the triangles to the next round strips surrounding the block and attach.

<<<Sew the triangles to each side of the final rectangle for the last border.   Then add on the top triangle to complete this pieced triangle.

Sew the pieced triangles to the block to complete.
Trim off the dog ears and you are done
