We are now ready to assemble section 8.

Cut your strips and lay them out with the blocks.

Start by sewing strip sets together.

Sew the strip set beside the Star Block.

Sew the strip sets to the top of the Square N Square and Heart blocks

Sew the SqNSq with Courthouse Steps to the top of the Star Block.

Sew the strip set to the side of the SqNSq Block

Sew the Heart Block to the SqNsq set

Sew that section to the SqNsq Courthouse Steps to complete Section 8.

Cutting directions for this Star Block can be found on page 11 of your pattern book.

I jumped right in and made the four corner HSTs and forgot to take pictures.  But again, we have made these units before.  Place your squares facing each other, draw the diagonal line, and sew 1/4in on either side of the line.  Cut on the line and press open for HSTs.

Next we make the 5 hourglass blocks that make up the remainder of this Star Block.  

Lay out your triangles and sew the two light and dark triangles together.  Press open to the dark side.   Then lay the them opposite colors touching and sew your hourglass together. Repeat for all 5 units.

  

Lay out your units to form the block

    

Sew the units together across the block.

Then sew the top row to the middle row..

  

Lastly, sew the bottom row to the top/middle rows to complete the block.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - From the Heart

Cutting directions for this block can be found on page 8 of your pattern book.

I jumped right in and made the two large HSTs but forgot to take pictures.  But we have made HSTs before....   Take the two large squares  and lay them facing each other.  

  Draw the diagonal line and sew 1/4 in away on both sides of the line.   

Cut between the lines and press open for two large HSTs.




Next, we make the hourglass  section of this block.  
Lay out your cut squares, draw the diagonal line.  Sew a scant 1/4in on both sides of the line and cut between the line.   This will result in 4 HSTs.

  

Take one pair of HSTs and lay them facing each other... opposite colors touching.  (Match the edges.. I've offset them in the first picture so that you could see opposite colors touching) Then cut on the diagonal and press open.  This will give you 4 QSTs (quarter square triangles)  

Lay the QSTs facing each other, opposite colors touching and stitch together.  Press open and you can spin the center for two hourglass blocks.   

 

Repeat this procedure with the remaining 2 HSTs.   You will have a total of 4 hourglass blocks... you will only need 3. 

Now to make the top of the heart... Draw diagonal lines on the small squares then sew to the rectangle and flip open.

 

Here are all our block parts laid out.  

Sew the two rectangle units together.  
Sew the three hourglass blocks together.  
Then sew the two large HSTs together.

 

To complete the block just sew the three sections together

We have two new blocks in Section 8.... From the Heart and the Star Block.  I will be posting tutorials for these new blocks next.

In section 5 we made the 7in option.... Here in Section 8 we will be making the 10.5in option at the top right hand column of page 24.... be sure to follow the correct cutting directions.  Assembly will be the same.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 7 Assembly

Assembling this Section 7 is just another puzzle to figure out.

Begin by looking at the strip diagram on page 29.

Cut and assemble strip sets and lay out the top part of the section to start.

Sew the strips to the right of the Square in a Square Courthouse steps.   There is a partial seam here, so leave an inch or so un-sewn.

Add the strip set below .... remember this is an area with the smaller size strips.

Sew on the two long strips next.

Now add the pinwheel center Square in a square.

Sew the strips above and below the Square in a Square block on the right.

  

Sew the seams on both sides of the pinwheel center block.  This will give you two partial seams.

 

Now it's time to add the strip set below the pinwheel center block.   Close up the partial seam and sew the long strips together.

    

Time to add the lower Square in a Square blocks and strips.  

Using the diagram cut and sew the various groupings of strip sets.  

There are a lot of partial seams in this lower section.

Start by attaching the strip sets below the each square.

     

Sew the squares to strips above  

Now close all the long seams to complete this section.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt - Section 7 Square in a Square Pinwheel Center.

The directions for making this 5" Square in a square with Pinwheel center begin on page 22 lower right hand corner.

But first, we need to go to page 19 right hand column to find the cutting measurements for the center  2.5in pinwheel.

Cut your squares, cut on the diagonal and pair up the triangles.

Sew the triangles into Half Square Triangles and lay out in pinwheel fashion

Pair the HSTs and sew two rows, being careful to orient the HSTs properly.

Sew the two halves together to form the center pinwheel block.

On page 22 lower right hand column you will find the measurements and cutting directions for cutting the first border. 

On page 23 top left hand column you will find the measurements and cutting directions for the squared border.

Add the first border by sewing the strips top and bottom; then the two sides.

  

To add the squared border sew triangles on top and bottom, then the two sides to complete this block.
