2019 Gypsy Wife - Section 5 Assembly

Using the diagram of Section 5 on page 27 of your pattern, I started by cutting and adding the strips between the two larger SqNsq blocks at the bottom of this section.

Hint:  Check the width size of your strips.  I had to corrected mine later but forgot to take a new picture.

Next I added the strip on the right side of the HST block

It was at this point I decided on a design change.... not because I can't do partial seams, but because I wanted my little deer SqNsq block farther away from Crazy Anne.  I added a strip on the right side of the HST block.

Here I moved the little block down to the bottom and put three short strips on top of it.  This eliminated having to do a partial seam.

Now I added the four strips next to the bordered pinwheel block.

Here is my completed Section 5

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 5 - Square-in-a-Square with Courthouse Steps

Cutting directions for this block can be found on page 24 left hand column.   There are two cutting options for this 7" block....  I used the first option with the smaller center square.  You can use either one depending on your fabric print size... the finished size of the block is the same either way.

I start by sewing the top and bottom strip to the center square.   Then add the two side strips.

Next we add opposite triangles to the block.  To make sure the block is centered, I fold both the center square and the triangles in half.

The triangles are then pinned matching the triangle and square folds

Repeat with the other two opposite triangles.

Lastly we need to add the final border strips.
Again, working with opposite sides, lay the block on top of the strip.  Pin the two ends and the center.  When stitching, aim to be just above the "X" formed by previous stitching to preserve your points.

Repeat with the opposite side and then the remaining two sides to complete the block.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 5 - Half-Square-Triangle Block

This is a repeat of the same block we made in section 4.

The cutting directions for this HST block can be found on page 16 of the pattern book.  We need to make 16 half-square triangles.

Cut your squares (background and focus fabrics).  Cut on the diagonal and pair up 16 pairs of background/focus triangles

I chain feed my squares through the machine, cut them apart and press.

I lay the blocks out and sew the HSTs together into rows by laying he units over onto the one before it and chain feeding them through to "Web" the block together.

Then I fold each row down onto the next one to complete the block.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 5 SqNsq blocks

For section 5 we need to make two (2) 4in Square-in-a-square blocks and one (1) 3in block.  Cutting directions can be found on page 22.

I cut the pieces needed for both 4in blocks... one large center and 4 small corner squares.

We have made this block before... maybe in a different size.... but the construction is the same.

You can fold each of the small squares in half diagonally or draw a diagonal line on each one.

Pin two squares to opposite corners of the large center square.   Sew beside the diagonal line and flip over to the corner to meet the edges.   The bottom layers are cut away.

Add the other two opposite corners, sew and flip to complete the block.   Repeat this process to make the second block.

Repeat this same procedure for the smaller block.

I used my Buddy Ruler and created the bonus HSTs.  You can draw a second line 1/4in from the first, stitch and then cut between the two sewn lines to create these cute bonus HSTs.

2019 Gypsy Wife - Section 5 - Bordered Pinwheel

Cutting directions for this bordered pinwheel block can be found on page 19 of the pattern book, left hand column.

We have made half square triangles before.... I have chosen to use only two fabrics rather than a variety which would result in a more scrappy pinwheel.

Cut your squares then cut them diagonally and pair them.
Stitch them together, press and lay out your pinwheel, being careful to watch the direction of the triangles.

Stitch the top two then the bottom two HSTs together. Then join the two halves to form the pinwheel block.

You can spin the center of the pinwheel to help the block lay flatter.

I laid out the border strips around the block.
Stitch on the top and bottom strips.... then the two side strips to complete the block.

2019 Gypsy Wife Quilt Along - Section 5 - Crazy Anne

The cutting directions for this block can be found on page 10 of the pattern book.

I spent a lot of time choosing fabrics and fussy cutting the four corners.

Begin by sewing the triangles to each side of the deer squares, being careful to keep the position of the deer properly oriented.

Attach the solid triangle to this pieced triangle.  To preserve points, be watchful to ensure that the stitch line is just above the "x" formed by earlier stitching (pink pin)

Next sew the triangle rectangles...  Lay the two triangles facing each other and pin.... there will be just the slightest dog ear overhanging at the top and bottom.

All the components of this block are now ready to stitch together.

We will be doing this 9-patch style.  Flip the center row of blocks onto the first and chain sew.  Then flip the right row of blocks over and chain sew.

Your block is now webbed together.

To complete the block we flip the top row down over the middle and stitch.  Then the two rows down over the third to stitch and complete the block.
